HAITI EARTHQUAKE DISASTER – HOW YOU CAN HELP:
HLMS is a registered charitable organization which has been sending relief aid to Haiti for 26 years. HLMS wires funds directly to the Lutheran Church of Haiti, so that supplies are purchased there and trucked quickly to the needy. Because many Lutheran congregations have been severely affected by the earthquake, HLMS is focusing on reaching them with its aid. HLMS is also a listed service organization of LCC. We pray that a timely and long-term response to this disaster will be used by our Lord to prepare many Haitians to turn from voodoo to Christ.
Pastor Revenel Benoit of the Lutheran Church of Haiti (LCH) reported that 45 of the 192 Lutheran Churches in LCH were destroyed by the earthquake and LCMS World Relief reported that the Lutheran pastors in the affected area were safe. HLMS will surely be in this earthquake aid business for the long haul, for reconstruction will likely take years. Pastor Benoit’s stone quarry in Gonaives should be of great help.
HAITI — “Every church build a church” . . .
$22,500.00 has already been sent to the Lutheran Church of Haiti (LCH) by the Haiti Lutheran Mission Society (HLMS) to kick off a campaign to rebuild churches. The January earthquake destroyed 55 churches of the LCH. 20 of them need to be rebuilt right away because their congregations have no shelter during the present rainy season. Thus, Rev. Revenel Benoit, President of LCH, made an emergency request to HLMS for $60,000. Although the cost would be $4000 per church, the LCH’s own Star Construction Co. will donate the concrete blocks for the walls when they construct them. So donors need to contribute only $3000 to rebuild each church. “Every church build a church.” Congregations of LCC as well as church groups and individuals are challenged by this appeal to donate only $3000 each to provide a well-built structure for a suffering Lutheran congregation in Haiti.
